Zhang Li The Chinese Bawu Instruments Maker
In 1986-89 Zhang Li studied in the Craft Institute of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province of China where he learnt music theories, performance and instrument-making from great master Zhou Shao-nan. After graduation he worked in the Suzhou Ethnic Instruments Factory, making Chinese ethnic wind instruments such as bawu, sheng, xiao and dizi.

While he was working in the instrument factory, he followed Wei Da-wei, the student of the greatest master Lu Chun-ling, and further studied flute playing. From then on he was assigned to make bawu for Master Lu.

Now he has his own flute workshop. He has been making top quality musical instruments for performers, flute masters, flute teachers in conservatories, universities and opera troupes. He is regularly supplying flutes for Chinese Dizi Culture Research Center, Suzhou Technology Institute and Suzhou Kun Opera on a long term basis. His bawus are highly commended by performers in China and from overseas.
