Hulusi is a free reed instrument made of a gourd with bamboo pipes fixed at the bottom. The middle pipe is a main pipe with 7 finger holes, 6 in front and 1 at the back. The pipes on both sides are drone pipes which can play harmony along with the main melody. We offer double-harmony hulusi and triple-harmony hulusi made by various renowned hulusi makers in Yunnan as well as other parts of China. We also have double mouth piece cloisonne hulusi which allows the player to play two keys alternatively in one hulusi. Our newest arrival is African crane gourd hulusi which has very fabulous look and beautiful sound.

African Crane Gourd Hulusi 01 (with tail, triple harmony) (New !!!)

This African gourd has retained a long bent stem which resembles the neck of a crane, so it is called African crane gourd.

The African gourd was orginally grown in Africa and was imported and transplanted in China in 1999 by Hulu Chen.

The African gourd has to be treated with a kind of Chinese medicine called "Er Cha" and preserved for 200 days until it turns deep red or dark brown before any hulusi production process takes place.
Because of the rugged interior, African gourd hulusi can effectively avoid noise and minimize echoes. So the sound of this kind of hulusi is very clean and clear.

The 3 pipes are made of tiger bamboo and they are fixed to the gourd.
The two pipes on the sides are drone pipes and both can produce harmony by simply controlling the "plum blossom valves" at the back of the pipes by using the thumbs.
When all finger holes closed as "so", open the high tone drone pipe will achieve "mi",
open the low tone drone pipe will achieve "la".

There are 7 finger holes on the main pipe, 6 in front an 1 at the back.

There is a plum blossom valve (thumb valve) on the left drone pipe. It is easily controlled by opening or closing it with the right thumb at any time of playing. (see detailed photos)

You don't need to move the hand away to plug or unplug as in the conventional foam valve.

The player can either play the key of G or D, depending which mouthpiece and main pipe one is controlling. Harmony is achieved by unblocking the side hole on the left by using the last finger of the left hand. This allows the performer to play with or without harmony at any time during the playing of the piece.
