Mabu is a wind instrument of Yi minority group. Popular in Liangshan, Szechuan Province. In Yi language "ma" means "bamboo", and "bu" means "reed pipe". The mabu is a vertical reed instrument. The flute is made of bamboo. The mouth piece is made of a piece of reed. The end of the pipe is fixed with a cow's horn as resonance box. There are 8 finger holes, 7in the front and 1 at the back. It is available in the key of C. Playing by exhaling and inhaling. Tone range: about one octave. Bright and blissful sound. Large volume. Suitable for playing in festivals. |
